NFL Football Previews - Preview Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2009 NFL football season

2009 NFL Football Preview - Pittsburgh Steelers
What can the Steelers do for an encore? A second Super Bowl title in four years with two different coaches would seem to signify a pinnacle has been reached. Considering that dynasties are so difficult to come by in today's NFL, some would argue that this run is as Impressive as any in recent history. They were able to obtain the second seed in the conference thanks to having an easier division to navigate than some rivals. Still, second-year coach Mike Tomlin helped guide the 2008 Steelers to five wins by five points or fewer, and that has a lot to do with coaching. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger made all the plays in the playoffs to win his second ring in four NFL seasons; he was merely ordinary in the regular season after playing hurt and throwing just 17 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions.

The Steelers ranked 20th in scoring offense, hardly what you would expect from a Super Bowl champ in a league where the offenses get all of the benefits. It helps when you have a defense that ranked No. 1 in passing, total yards and points allowed and second against the run and in sacks. That unit has a few changes but nothing that Tomlin deems irreplaceable. The offense hopes to improve with an offensive line that should have a little more stability and fewer injuries. The running backs are a deep group behind starter Willie Parker, the tight ends (Heath Miller and Matt Spaeth) are as good as any combo in the league but the receivers could be a little worse with the loss of Nate Washington to Tennessee. Limas Sweed of Texas will be counted on to step up after a disappointing rookie season where he only caught eight passes. If he does, the offense could take a big step forward.

ASK the bookie - What else is to be expected of a team that won another championship? The last time this happened, there was regression. With a hungry Baltimore in the division, the first-place schedule and all of the close wins last fall, The Bookie sees a drop this season. The playoffs are possible, but UNDER the 10.5 wins looks like the right side.
