2009 NFL Football Preview - Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins emerged as the biggest surprise in the league under first-year coach Tony Sparano, going from a 1-15 laughingstock to a 10-win playoff team. Some of coach-turned-General Manager Bill Parcells's footprints were all over this bunch: a beefed up offensive line that drafted Jake Long out of Michigan with its first pick, a quarterback that's steady if unspectacular (Chad Pennington, who had seven interceptions in the regular season until the head-scratching four he threw against Baltimore in the home playoff game) and a defense that switched to the 3-4 and allowed less than 20 ppg to rank ninth in the league. That defense should be improved and it adds longtime Miami rush end Jason Taylor after he spent an unsuccessful season in Washington. |

The offense, much like the defense, was ahead of the curve last fall. After starting 0-2, the Fins unveiled the single wing offense in New England and the Fins coasted to a shocking 38-13 upset that literally woke up the world and had offensive coordinators from every level high school on up working on the "Wildcat" formation all the next week to try to get it implemented to their attack. Ronnie Brown is the feature back and Ricky Williams also got 160 carries, as each came back from injury and suspension to successful resume their careers. The wideout position was the big question mark, but the Fins drafted two solid college receivers and get back steady Rich Camarillo from an ACL tear.
ASK the bookie - In the end, the Fins achieved much more than most previously thought possible, eclipsing their season wins total by five or so (depending on where you shopped). Most think it was rather flukish, as evidenced by the number being 7 again this year. With foes being more adjusted to the 'Wildcat' offense, perhaps it won't be as easy to steal a win or two. This team just doesn't look like it will be as fortunate as last fall's bunch, and in the NFL sometimes that can mean everything. The Bookie calls for 8-8 at best and a view on the outside looking in at the playoffs.
