2009 NFL Football Preview - Jacksonville Jaguars
One season after a nice playoff run, head coach Jack Del Rio suddenly finds himself on the hotseat. So it goes in the NFL. The Jags were decimated up front last fall, and there were no holes in 2008 for Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. In 2007, Jones-Drew carved through defenses as the 5-7 UCLA rookie's line gave him ample time to see his way to wherever he wanted to go en route to helping the Jags to the second-best rushing offensive in the league. A decimated offensive line slowed Jacksonville to 18th in rushing. That statistic alone was a big reason why the Jags slipped from 12 wins to just five last year. Few teams were more banged up. Both starting guards were injured for the year in the first week and the center was lost for six games before the season started. Quarterback David Garrard had a mistake-filled 2008 as he was forced to throw too often. Torry Holt is brought in to lead the new receiving corps, as leading receiver Matt Jones, leading touchdown-catcher Reggie Williams (with only three) and Jerry Porter all depart. Three receivers went in the dra ft, and Jacksonville has a couple of young veterans who could also develop. Former Cleveland defensive coordinator Melvin Tucker takes over, and he's going to try to create turnovers by attacking upfield. Two defensive ends were the top draft picks of last year, and the rookies (Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves) combined for six sacks, a number they could double this fall. |

ASK the bookie - The Jags might be the worst team in this division - and better than any of the four teams in the NFC West. Six tough division games await, but the rest of the schedule is more tenable. It won't be easy, though, and The Bookie likes the talent in Houston, the coaching in Nashville and the overall leadership and consistent winning in Indy a bit better than anything Jacksonville can offer. Call for seven wins, a few narrow misses and 'what if's' that will be the remnants of the Del Rio regime after he is canned following the season.
