2009 NFL Football Preview - Indianapolis Colts
Franchise quarterback Peyton Manning will be tested this fall. Longtime head coach Tony Dungy left his position shortly after the Colts, winners of nine straight to end the season, lost in San Diego in the wild card round. Manning, who enters his 12th season, has always had Marvin Harrison as his top receiver. But No. 88 is a free agent this fall, as he's slowed a step and the Colts decided against resigning him. Reggie Wayne steps into the role of feature
receiver, and he didn't do so in a quiet way. He brought a construction truck and a hard hat to his first training camp practice in Terre Haute earlier this month. Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark also will get more reps, and Colts drafted more infantry help. Joseph Addai is the lead back, Mike Hart will try to stay healthy in his second season, and the NCAA's leading rusher D/Ronald Brown was Indy's first draft choice. |

More importantly, the O-line figures to be more healthy this fall. Right tackle Ryam Diem was the only starter to stay healthy all season. None of the injuries were career-threatening, so center Jeff Saturday should be back to lead a young group of now-veterans that has developed depth. The return of offensive line coach Howard Mudd and offensive coordinator Tom Moore (with 'senior' roles now on the coaching staff) was the most notable change of the last few
weeks, with Manning getting the much-wanted stability and continuity he's had for his entire career.
ASK the bookie - Even with all the woes of last season, Indy still ripped off nine wins to finish the regular season before crumbling in overtime at San Diego in the playoffs last fall. Skeptics say that the change in coaches and coordinators might signify a step back, especially with all of the division seemingly going in the other direction. But as long as 'The Robot' is calling plays for Indy, The Bookie sees 10 wins and at least a playoff bid as an automatic for the Colts.
