2009 NFL Football Preview - Buffalo Bills

The Bills are at a point where progress must happen, and soon, if people in the front office and on the sidelines want to keep their jobs. Fourth-year head coach Dick Jauron has suffered through three straight 7-9 seasons, all of which the Bills have shown plenty of promise but have failed to make the final step toward the playoffs. Unfortunately, the sledding in the tough AFC East never gets any easier. Jauron decided to make the bold step of bringing in oft-criticized Terrell Owens from Dallas in the spring, a move that drew lots of opinions on both sides. Owens, a step or two slower than in his prime, is still an elite receiver that figures to garner much attention - that will be key in slowing opponents who were all too keen to take away big play receiver Lee Evans last fall

Trent Edwards, a Stanford graduate, is not the strongest physical QB in the league but few will argue with his intelligence. Jauron implemented a fast-paced, no-huddle scheme to play into his strengths. Backup RB Fred Jackson has been training in the slot (think Thurman Thomas?) and might play there after Marshawn Lynch's three-game suspension ends. The O-line has been restructured and appears to be the weakness (if there is one) on that side of the ball. On the other side, the Bills had only 24 sacks and 10 interceptions last fall. Defensive end Aaron Schobel had only one sack last year and must improve; the Bills took Aaron Maybin of Penn State with its top draft choice on another DE. All of the stalwarts from the last few years return.

Buffalo figures to be a nice surprise in the East and in the AFC if they stay healthy (and stop moving key division games to Toronto, too). They play all three division teams on the road in the first six weeks, in addition to home games against Tampa, New Orleans and Cleveland. A 4-2 start to the season would be nice, but remember Buffalo was 5-1 last year before winning two of 10 down the stretch. The Bookie recommends OVER the 7.5 wins that are posted at several shops.
